Where to Get Matcha in NYC

December 18, 2023December 17, 2023 1 comment
Where to Get Matcha in NYC

One of the things I love the most about visiting New York City is how readily accessible high-quality matcha is. This blog post was first written in 2015, so it definitely needed updating. The tea landscape has changed so much since then. Here is everywhere that I recommend getting matcha in NYC.

Table of Contents
  • Kettl
  • Setsugekka
  • Sorate
  • Matchaful
  • Cha-An
  • Bibble & Sip
  • Maman

Kettl

348 Bowery, New York, NY 10012
70 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222

Kettl specializes in Japanese teas so they are one of the best places to get matcha in NYC. They offer drinks to go as well as reservations for their tasting bars. The house ground matcha is a must-try, especially at Greenpoint because you can see their matcha mill in action.

Setsugekka

74 E 7th Street, New York, NY 10003

Setsugekka is the perfect place to stop while wandering the East Village. They serve several brands of matcha in addition to their house ground offering. The matcha affogato is just the thing for a hot summer day.

Sorate

103 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012

Sorate is one of the newest editions to the NYC tea scene. They have a tea house where you can get traditional matcha as well as lattes and other teas. I highly recommend pairing the tomato yuzu miso soup with a bowl of matcha.

Matchaful

184 Prince St., New York, NY 10012
217 Mulberry St., New York, NY 10012
87 Christopher St., New York, NY 10014
450 W 33rd St., New York, NY 10001 – Inside Whole Foods
240 E 54th St., New York, NY 10022 – Inside Clean Market
250 Vesey Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10281 – Inside Clean Market

Matchaful’s cafes serve matcha along with a menu of plant-based and gluten-free offerings ranging from noodles to soft serve and pastries. Their drinks change seasonally so there’s always something new to try. I love that I can find a location in many different parts of the city.

Cha-An

230 East 9th St 2nd FL, New York, NY 10003
238A East 9th Street, New York, New York 10003

Cha-An is a wonderful Japanese cafe where you can order matcha, other teas, savories, and sweets. They also happen to have one of the fanciest toilets in the women’s bathroom that I have ever seen. The BONBON location is perfect for grabbing something to go.

Bibble & Sip

253 W 51st St, New York, NY 10019

Bibble & Sip is a family-run bakery and cafe that offers matcha as well as other teas and coffee. The matcha creme puffs are to die for. Sara from Tea Happiness introduced me to them when she brought them to a gathering. I’ve been addicted to them ever since.

Maman

545 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10022
230 Park Ave, New York, NY 10169
383 W 31st St, New York, NY 10199
114 W 41st St, New York, NY 10036
205 Hudson St, New York, NY 10013
375 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014
667 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022
152 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10023
800 Washington St, New York, NY 10014
155 E 44th St, New York, NY 10017
22 W 25th St, New York, NY 10010
12 W 48th St, New York, NY 10036
239 Centre St, New York, NY 10013
211 W Broadway, New York, NY 10013
67 University Pl, New York, NY 10003
1424 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10028
429 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024
154 Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11201
80 Kent St, Brooklyn, NY 11222

I had to include Maman on this list because their matcha is very good for a cafe and they have a TON of locations. Every location I have been to was incredibly beautiful, like something out of a magazine photo shoot. I like to sit by myself and read a book while enjoying my matcha latte.
