It seems that everyone has become obsessed with the purported health benefits of tea. There’s not a day that goes by without someone asking me if tea will help them loose weight or keep them getting cancer. Green tea is the healthiest kind of tea, right? There’s lots of studies claiming to “prove” how good tea is for you but let’s be honest, these studies are likely to be done by companies with a vested interest. Tea is popping up in all sorts of creams, lotions and supplements. This is why I always recommend everyone take the whole health benefit thing with a grain of salt. For me tea is about the taste, the history and the culture. Any health benefits I may get are simply a pleasant side affect. Just look at how many wine and beer connoisseurs have made consuming alcohol their passion. Drinking isn't really good for you but we do it anyway because we enjoy it. If you don’t truly enjoy tea then what is the point? Tea will always be a healthier choice than soda, energy drinks and other sugary substances. That lifestyle change alone just may be the greatest health benefit of all. What do you think?

I think that tea is healthy much in the same way fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy. Yes, they are healthy, and this can be verified by scientific study. And I find this research interesting. However, regardless of the details of exactly what they do or don't do, it's still best to eat a diverse diet full of lots of natural plant-based foods. No one food or drink is ever going to be a magic bullet; optimum health is achieved by eating a little bit of a lot of different things.
This post got me thinking and I wrote a longer followup. =)
I definitely agree with you there. Great followup post Alex!
