Golden Leaf Tea Sun Moon Lake

Country of Origin: Taiwan Leaf Appearance: long, dark, spindly Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: reddish amber For some reason, certain kinds of tea tug at my heartstrings more than others. Ruby #18 is one of them. Just the idea of a black tea from Taiwan really blew my mind when I first discovered it. Growing up in a Lipton Orange Pekoe family, a “self-drinking” black tea was completely new territory. The history behind this variety is also pretty fascinating. I will definitely have to revisit my old “Meet the Tea” series so that I can tell its story in another future blog…

Golden Tea Leaf Golden Red Tea

Country of Origin: Taiwan Leaf Appearance: long, spindly with some golden buds Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: dark reddish amber I’m a complete and total sucker for Taiwanese black teas. This one caught my attention because Golden Leaf Tea referred to it as “small leaf”. Nearly all of the Taiwanese hong cha that I’ve tried has been made with var. In most of Asia black tea is actually called red…

Golden Leaf Tea Ali Mountain Oolong

Country of Origin: Taiwan Leaf Appearance: deep green, tightly rolled Ingredients: oolong tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: deep gold For some reason, 2015 and 2016 seem to have been an odyssey of Taiwanese tea. I think I’ve written about them more than any other type. Most of that is happenstance through samples I’ve received but it’s been nice to focus a bit on a particular region. Perhaps my tastes will bend more towards darker teas like Wuyi oolongs as the weather cools. Having really enjoyed their Honey Red Jade, I was really excited to dig into Golden Leaf Tea’s Ali Mountain Oolong. The mouthfeel…

Golden Leaf Tea Honey Red Jade

Country of Origin: Taiwan Leaf Appearance: dark, tightly rolled Ingredients: oolong tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: amber I seem to have a bit of an obsession with honey aroma teas from Taiwan lately. Whether they are blacks or oolongs, I want to drink them all. This one is a very unique bug bitten black tea. My late night tasting notes humorously included the phrase “holy crap!”. It’s no wonder that it won 3rd place at the 2015 North American Tea Championship. The taste was sweet and slightly fruity with a very strong, lingering aroma. Honey definitely dominated the flavor profile but there hints of…
