Metropolitan Tea Company Boston Tea Party Earl Grey

Country of Origin: Sri Lanka Leaf Appearance: small, dark Ingredients: black tea, natural flavor Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain teacup Liquor: dark reddish brown My friends picked me up a box of this tea on a trip to Boston a few months ago. Thank you Paul and Ashleigh! Do they know me or what? It came in a colorful commemorative Boston Tea Party box that had lots of historical facts printed on it. Although this tea was bagged, the leaves were fairly high quality and i really liked that the paper was unbleached. The taste was earthy with a refreshing astringency and just the right amount of…

The Republic of Tea Earl Greyer

Country of Origin: India Leaf Appearance: small, dark Ingredients: black tea, bergamot oil Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: ceramic teacup and mesh infuser Liquor: reddish brown I’m not often a fan of bergamot because I usually find its strong citrus flavor overwhelmingly caustic. This particular rendition is a blend of black teas from Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very well balanced. I think a big part of that is the quality of the leaf used. The taste was robust and earthy, even underneath the very strong flavoring. It definitely still had lots of classic early grey flavor but the finish was cooling…

The Kettle Shed Tea Company Earl Grey

Photo: The Kettle Shed Tea Company Country of Origin: not listed Leaf Appearance: small, dark Ingredients: black tea, flavoring Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: ceramic teacup and mesh infuser Liquor: deep reddish brown +The Kettle Shed: Tea Company is a “new to me” company based out of the UK. I was immediately drawn to Zoe Nixon’s story and enthusiasm for tea. In addition to selling online they also have an adorable booth at the Chiswick Food and Drink Market at Dukes Meadow. As many of you know, I have a contentious relationship with Earl Grey. The aroma of the dry leaves wasn’t super strong when I opened my tin of…

    LuLin Teas Posh Earl Grey

Country of Origin: Sri Lanka, China Leaf Appearance: dark, somewhat twisted with lots of flower petals Ingredients: Sri Lankan back tea, Keemun black tea, bergamot oil, orange flowers and corn flowers Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: ceramic teacup and mesh infuser Liquor: reddish brown The dry leaves of this tea were larger in size and higher quality than most earl greys. I was impressed by their appearance post-steeping and I think that the use of Ceylon and Keemun made all the difference. I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen orange blossom flowers before but they were a nice touch of color along with the typical corn flowers. The…

Le Palais des Thés Green of London

Country of Origin: China Leaf Appearance: deep green, very strong citrus aroma Ingredients: green tea, bergamot natural flavoring, blue mallow, cornflower Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 180 degrees Preparation Method: ceramic teacup and mesh infuser Liquor: gold The Earl and I don’t always get a long but I’m a big fan of Le Palais des Thés so I decided to give this blend a whirl. I was a little worried that it might be too citrusy because I was blasted with a big burst of bergamot when I first opened the bag. I was happy to find that the flavoring was strong but it worked well with the vegetal and sweet green tea.…
