Yunnan Sourcing Traditional Smoked Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong Spring 2015

Country of Origin: China Leaf Appearance: small, dark Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: amber Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong has always been an interesting tea to me. When most westerners think of Lapsang Souchong we imagine tar pits, Liquid Smoke, burnt rubber tires and Winston Churchill (it was purportedly his favorite tea). The truth is that not all Lapsang is created equal. The traditionally smoked varieties are much, much more subtle. Yunnan Sourcing 2014 Autumn Moonlight Pavilion Pure Bud Bi Luo Chun White Tea

Country of Origin: China Leaf Appearance: varied shades of green with lots of downy buds Ingredients: white tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 175 degrees Preparation Method: glass gaiwan Liquor: pale gold As my Instagram followers can attest, I’ve been obsessing over this tea the last few months. You might say to yourself, I thought Bi Luo Chun was a green tea? The term can also refer to the leaf shaping method. I experimented with brewing this tea every which way, from a glass teapot to kyusu, test tube steepers and gaiwans. By far the glass gaiwan produced my favorite result but “grandpa style” is always fun too. The taste was delicate…

Yunnan Sourcing Jingmai Mountain Wild Arbor Black Tea of Spring 2015

Country of Origin: China Leaf Appearance: dark, long and twisted Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: porcelain gaiwan Liquor: deep reddish brown I placed an order with +Yunnan Sourcing recently and was happily surprised to find a sample of this tea in the box. The words “wild arbor” immediately caught my attention. I was further intrigued when I read that this tea is made is from a naturally hybridized assamica varietal that is smaller than pure assamica. Cacao was the dominant element of the flavor profile right from the get go. The finish took more of a floral lean but there was still a lot of sweetness. This is…

Yunnan Sourcing Feng Qing Black Tea Mini Bricks

Country of Origin: China Leaf Appearance: dark, tightly compressed Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 30 seconds Water Temperature: 212 degrees Preparation Method: celadon gongfu teapot Liquor: dark reddish brown Some of you might remember that I did a Tandem Tea Tasting with this tea a few years ago. I picked up a bag of these bricks on a recent +Yunnan Sourcing order so I thought it might be time to do a formal review. At $8.50 for a 100g bag you really get a lot of bang for your buck. I just had to throw in a few extra toys to make the shipping worth it. I used a gaiwan the time that I had this…
