    Teavana Samurai Chai Mate

Country of Origin: not listed Leaf Appearance: mottled mix of colors, stemmy looking Ingredients: green mate, green rooibos, cinnamon, anise, cardamom, almond, papaya, pineapple, orange and lemongrass Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 205 degrees Preparation Method: ceramic teacup and mesh infuser Liquor: gold This tea was given to me as part of a secret Santa present. It was very heavy on the cinnamon but still fruity and light. All of the sweeter ingredients completely masked the astringency of the green mate. The finish of each sip left a tongue tingling feeling and a cloyingly sweet aftertaste. While not necessarily bad, this wasn’t really my cup of tea. I’m a bit of a chai…

    David’s Tea Chocolate Rocket

Country of Origin: Brazil Leaf Appearance: mixed colors, many small pieces Ingredients: roasted yerba maté, cocoa, almonds, roasted chicory root, raspberries, natural and artificial flavoring Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 200 degrees Preparation Method: Breville One-Touch Tea Maker Liquor: deep reddish brown Being the chocoholic that I am, I couldn’t pass up picking up a sample pack of this herbal blend when I stopped into David’s Tea’s shop in New York City. The ingredients were so varied that I really wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was that it sounded delicious. I am so glad to report that my prediction was as accurate as can be. My first sip was nothing but…

    Tiesta Tea KokoMaté

Country of Origin: not listed Leaf Appearance: small, mottled green and brown Ingredients: organic Yerba maté, rooibos, coconut fruit, cinnamon Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 205 degrees Preparation Method: Breville One-Touch Tea Maker Liquor: deep, brownish red The first thing that struck me about this tea was the strange translucent brick color of the liquor. Its aroma was very heavy on the coconut and had just a hint of woodsiness. The taste was sweet and fruity but well balanced. I thought that the cinnamon was a nice touch that added a subtle spiciness to the finish. The coconut and rooibos helped to cut the bitterness that is usually association with yerba maté. This tea was…

    Handmade Tea Yerbaberry Mint

Leaf Appearance: woodsy potpourri Ingredients: roasted yerba maté, organic chocolate mint and elderberries Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 180 degrees Preparation Method: Breville One-Touch Tea Maker Liquor: dark brown This month’s shipment from Handmade Tea was exciting because it contained two ingredients I had never tried before, chocolate mint and elderberries. I love that tiny tins of each ingredient are included so that I can taste them separately. I’m not a huge fan of yerba maté because it can be bitter at times but the roasting took the edge off, leaving a pleasant nuttiness without the bite that I was expecting. The elderberries had a subtly fruity raisin-like taste. The chocolate mint was…

    Adagio Teas Mango Mate Tea

Country of Origin: Argentina Leaf Appearance: small, dark green with strong fruity aroma Ingredients: yerba mate tea, natural mango flavor, marigold flowers Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 150 degrees Preparation Method: Breville One-Touch Tea Maker Liquor: brassy gold The dry leaves of this tea were incredibly aromatic. It wasn’t exactly like mango fruit but reminded me very much of mango flavored Italian ice. The tea itself was woods and sweet with the mango coming through as mellow fruity notes. I enjoy yerba mate because it feeds my caffeine addiction but sometimes it can have a bitter edge that I find unpleasant. The mango flavoring in this blend tempered that astringency and gave the tea…
