    Satemwa Estate Bvumbwe Hand Made

Country of Origin: Malawi Leaf Appearance: dark, twisted with some stems Ingredients: black tea Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 200 degrees Preparation Method: stainless steel infuser basket and ceramic teacup Liquor: deep amber Satemwa Estate in Malawi never ceases to surprise me. Their teas are so unique that they really stand out compared to most of the African grown tea that I have tried before. The leaves of this tea were gorgeously long and spindly. You’d almost think that they were a Chinese dan cong! The taste was malty with notes of chocolate and just a hint of citrus brightness. The description on their website compares it to “orangette”, a Belgian orange…

    Satemwa Estate White Bvumbwe Peony

Country of Origin: Malawai Leaf Appearance: large, mixed greens and browns Ingredients: white tea Steep time: 5 minutes Water Temperature: 175 degrees Preparation Method: glass teapot Liquor: deep gold How is it that I grabbed the Broken Special Pekoe version of this tea first? I didn’t realize that I had these big, beautiful leaves waiting for me. I couldn’t resist snapping a picture for Instagram before preparing it. They bore an uncanny resemblance to a pile of fall leaves that’s ready to be jumped into. They practically came back to life as the tea steeped. They were large and mostly whole with plenty of visible buds. In the cup there were sweet notes of…

    Satemwa Estate Zomba Steamed TSFOP

Country of Origin: Malawi Leaf Appearance: deep green, curled Ingredients: green tea Steep time: 2 minutes Water Temperature: 170 degrees Preparation Method: glass teapot Liquor: pale gold +Satemwa Tea & Coffee is one of my favorite sources when it comes to African teas. Not only are they committed to social responsibility but they also have a lot of experimental creations that really set them apart. This is a green tea that has been steamed as well as rolled. The leaves were . There were sweet grassy notes that I had a hard time describing. It wasn’t exactly like a Japanese green tea but terroir probably accounts for that subtle difference. A fruity undertone kept…

    Satemwa Estate White Bvumbwe BSP

Country of Origin: Malawai Leaf Appearance: varied greens and browns, somewhat broken Ingredients: white tea Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 175 degrees Preparation Method: glass teapot Liquor: deep brassy gold The leaves of this were a hodgepodge of greens and browns. Although they were somewhat broken, I still spotted a few scattered needles and whole leaves. The BSP in the name stands for Broken Special Pekoe. It brewed up a gorgeous brassy gold color. When I posted a picture of my pot on Instagram, several people said they though the pot was made out of colored glass because of the beautiful liquor. Enough about the leaves already, what did it taste like?…

    Satemwa Estate Zomba White Pearls

Country of Origin: Malawi Leaf Appearance: deep green, tightly rolled Ingredients: white tea Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 175 degrees Preparation Method: glass teapot Liquor: gold When Satemwa Estate reached out and offered to send some samples, I jumped at the chance. I previously reviewed their White Antlers, sent to me by +Tea Journeyman Shop, and I was really impressed with how well they treat their workers when I met them at World Tea Expo. The leaves are hand rolled into little cocoons. They were not quite a pearl since the shape was more oblong but it was close enough. I used eight pearls in my two cup teapot and that seemed to be…

    Tea Journeyman Satemwa White Antlers

Country of Origin: Malawi Leaf Appearance: dark, twiggy Ingredients: white tea stems Steep time: 3 minutes Water Temperature: 185 degrees Preparation Method: glass teapot Liquor: pale amber Every once in a while I hear about a tea that I am dying to try and this one has definitely been one of those. I met the folks from Satemwa at World Tea Expo and was really impressed by how much they care for their staff. Unfortunately I visited at the end of the last day of the show so the leaves of this tea had been spent. As luck would have it, +Tea Journeyman Shop carries it so I was overjoyed to receive a sample. It…
