    Tea Places: MatchaBar

You all know how much I love matcha so I was really excited when I heard about MatchaBar, Brooklyn’s newest tea spot. I spent a great Sunday afternoon there with the NYC Tea Social Meetup last month. The staff greeted us warmly and explained how their drinks work. They had everything from matcha shots to lattes and fruity specialty drinks. I opted for a matcha chai latte because the unusual combination intrigued me. It was somewhat spicy but the matcha definitely dominated. MatchaBar was kind enough to give us a private area in their office since we had a larger group. We shared a nice spread of mostly matcha themed sweets. All of them…

    Steepster Meetup: Tea Drunk

Now that the craziness of the holidays is over the Steepster meetup group is back in action. Last week we met right on my home turf, Tea Drunk in the East Village. We’ve gone to several different kinds of places over the last few months and even took a class on matcha. Jason, one of the wizards behind the curtain at Steepster, was able to join in on the fun this time around. While everyone loves tea, most of our group is still in the beginning stages of their exploration. I was unanimously elected to choose the teas for the evening and while a daunting task, I tried to pick the teas that suited…

    Steepster Meetup: Alice’s Teacup

The NYC crowd on Steepster has been trying to hold monthly meetups at different tea spots around the city and last week we went to Alice’s Teacup (Chapter I). You might remember that I stopped in there for the first time last month but wasn’t able to get a table at the time. We had a large group without a reservation and they were very accommodating. I must say that the dining room is absolutely adorable. I loved the eclectic mix of refined tearoom and wonderland whimsy. All of us ooh’d and aah’d at the wonderfully mismatched teacups. Just about everyone in the group selected “The Nibble” which gave a good sampling of…

Steepster Meetup: Chari-T and Bosie Tea Parlor

Last week a group of tea friends from Steepster and I attended an introduction to matcha class. It was held at Harney & Son’s SoHo and conducted by tea master Souheki Mori. She holds monthly tastings at several places in NYC and most of the proceeds benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy and the earthquake in Japan. None of us need an excuse to have tea but it felt great to know that we were also helping others in some way. Although I have made matcha at home for years, I was eager to learn more and particularly excited to experience my first bowl of “thick tea”. Souheki was friendly and knowledgeable with a contagious…
